Thats what Dominique Donner, South Africa's women's
triathlon champion, say when asked what makes
her want to swim 1500m, cycle 40km and run 10km
- all in under two hours.
Donner - she talks
about herself in the third person as 'Donner'
- turns 30 this month and by the time you read
this will probably be ranked 10th in the world
of female triathletes. Thats if she wins the SA
Championship at Langebaan on 3 March. Later in
the month she'll be competing in the All Africa
Championship in Port Elizabeth, on 24 March.
Says Donner: "We
get selected for the Olympic squad based on our
overall points tally. So the championships are
important because tht points count towards that."
Donner wants to
compete in Athens in 2004. She missed Sydney Olympics
last year even though she beat Lizel Moore in
a preliminary race in Perth in April 2000 by about
3 minures. Moore was selected by NOCSA to represent
the country based on her rankings, which seems
a little unfair given that Moore - who lives and
trains in Australia - had competed in more triathlons
than Donner. Moore came in 30th in the Olympic
finals with a time of 2:08:18 - some eight minutes
adfrift of the winner (2:00:40).
Last month, Donner
won her eighth 5FM Energade triathlon and as we
go to press she's clocked up 10 wins in succession.
She seems invincible at the moment.
