The Eastern Province triathlon association hosts
the 2001 All Africa triathlon championships at
Hobie Beach today when many leading stars will
be in action.
It is an international
event and will serve as a qualifying race for
the World Championships and Olympic Games.
The events - men
and women - will include not only international
elite athletes but also a number of junior categories
with athletes as young as twelve years competing.
Triathlon is the
newest Olympic sport and is being developed on
the African Continent. Entries have been recieved
from Namibia, Zimbabawe, Mauritius, Reunion, Britian,
Australia and South Africa.
Among the stars
taking part are SA's Conrad Stoltz, who won the
title last year, Trudi Standler, the SA champ
for 2001 and Dominique Donner, who came second
in the woman's SA and Africa champs.
The organisors
are hoping for a good turnout from the people
of the friendly city in what could be one of the
best triathlon events seen in PE in many years.
