2002 NEWS
Well
I starting the year 2002 rather badly after breaking
my wrist in a bike accident on the 12th January.
That was the end of my 2001 / 2002 season. It also
put me out of the running for Commonwealth Games.
Unfortunately there was no injury clause and I was
not allowed to prove myself after the April cut
off date. It was a very frustrating time for me
as competing in the Games was also a great ambition
of mine.
I left Cape Town at the end of May (rather unfit!)
and was based in Switzerland for 4 months training
and racing. I was very fortunate to stay with a
wonderful family, the Bellwalds, in a small town
called Brittnau, 60km outside of Zurich. The main
purpose of my training was to prepare for the World
Long Distance Triathlon Championships which was
held on the 22nd September in Nice , France.
I altogether raced 6 races of which 3 of them were
duathlons....not exactly my favourite sport! Below
are my results...
14th JULY - ZURICH WOMEN'S ONLY INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC
DISTANCE TRIATHLON( a non drafting event)
Result: 1st PRO
I won the race in a PB time of 1 hr 58:10 (swim
20mins, bike 59:10, run 38:01)
4th AUGUST - SOUTH AFRICAN DUATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS
PRETORIA (10kms run, 40kms bike, 5kms run)
Result: 2nd PRO
I was selected to compete for SA in the elite category
at the World Championships in the USA.
17th AUGUST - SWISS SPRINT CUP TRIATHLON
Result: 2nd PRO
7th SEPTEMBER - POWERMAN ZOFINGEN SHORT DISTANCE
DUATHLON (10kms run, 50kms bike, 5kms run)
Result: 6th PRO
22nd SEPTEMBER - NICE WORLD LONG DISTANCE TRIATHLON
CHAMPIONSHIPS ( 4000ms swim, 124kms bike, 30kms
run)
Result: 16th PRO
(7hrs 45) I was extremely happy with my result at
the World Championships. This is my first ever long
distance race. My race plan was always to race conservatively.
One does not know what to expect the first time
over such a long day. I have gained enormous confidence
and now know that I can race this distance much
faster. The next World Champs is in May 2003 in
Ibiza, Spain. Can't wait!
Next up is the 5FM ENERGADE Series starting on the
6th October in PE with the final event on the 2nd
December in Pretoria.
Thank you to JICM
for the great sponsorship they have given me to
enable me to spend time in Europe and to race the
World Championships in Nice. See you at the races!
